The Medici pope Leo X, son of Lorenzo the Magnificent, sits enthroned and blessing in the central niche of the Udienza, beneath the papal coat of arms with the keys and tiara. Baccio Bandinelli began the marble statue for Cosimo I around 1540 and it was completed by Vincenzo de' Rossi, as part of the gallery of Medici statues on the raised dais of the Salone dei Cinquecento.
