The marble giant stands before the rusticated façade of the Palazzo Vecchio, sling over his shoulder, gazing towards the enemy. Michelangelo's original, carved in 1501–1504 and placed here as a symbol of the Florentine Republic, was moved to the Accademia in 1873 and replaced by this copy in 1910.
