Mosaics of King Roger's Hall – Palazzo dei Normanni, Palermo

On a gold ground, pairs of peacocks, deer, centaurs shooting arrows, lions and leopards face each other among palms and orange trees, in a style inspired by Near Eastern textiles. These secular mosaics of the 12th century, from the time of the Norman kings, decorate the hall traditionally named after Roger II.
