The kingdoms of West Africa, among them the Mandinka kingdom, border the southern Ocean, with a cartouche discussing the old belief that the torrid zone was uninhabitable. It belongs to the 53 maps painted on the cupboard doors of the Medici wardrobe for Cosimo I, by the cosmographer Egnazio Danti from 1563 and by Stefano Bonsignori after 1575.
