Above the entrance door, two gilded lions flank the monogram of Christ in a radiant sun, on a blue ground strewn with gold fleurs-de-lis, beneath a Gothic pediment. The inscription «Rex regum et dominus dominantium», «King of kings and Lord of lords», recalls that Florence proclaimed Christ its king in 1528; the text was changed to this form under Cosimo I in 1551.
