Thirty-nine gilded compartments painted on canvas celebrate the history of Florence, its quarters and dominions, and the victories of Cosimo I over Pisa and Siena, around his apotheosis at the centre. Giorgio Vasari and his workshop created this ceiling in 1563–1565, after raising the roof of the great hall built in 1494 for the Great Council of the Republic.
