In the central tondo of the ceiling, Duke Cosimo I de' Medici sits enthroned in armour while a winged Florence crowns him, surrounded by putti holding the coats of arms of the city's guilds. Giorgio Vasari painted this glorification of his patron in 1563–1565 as the keystone of the Salone dei Cinquecento ceiling.
