The cross vaults of the portico are covered with grotesques, birds, garlands and medallions on a pale ground, around the Medici coat of arms and small mythological scenes. This decoration was painted in 1565 by Vasari's team for the arrival of Joanna of Austria, bride of Francesco de' Medici.
