A granite obelisk without hieroglyphs, 25 metres high, brought from Egypt by Caligula for his circus, where Saint Peter is said to have been martyred. Domenico Fontana raised it at the centre of the square in 1586 for Pope Sixtus V, crowned with a cross above an inscription proclaiming Christus vincit, Christus regnat, Christus imperat.
