Saint John the Baptist – Benedetto da Maiano – Palazzo Vecchio, Florence

The young St John the Baptist, patron saint of Florence, stands above the doorway holding his cross, flanked by putti with garlands, against the gold fleurs-de-lis of the blue walls. Benedetto da Maiano carved this marble group around 1480 for the portal between the Sala delle Udienze and the Sala dei Gigli.
