Sacred Allegory – Giovanni Bellini – Uffizi Gallery, Florence

On a marble terrace by a lake, the Virgin enthroned, saints and children around a small tree meet in a dreamlike landscape of cliffs and villages. Painted by Giovanni Bellini in 1490–1499, its complex iconography makes it one of the most discussed paintings of the Italian 15th century; it came from Vienna in 1793.
