Penelope at Her Loom – Stradano – Palazzo Vecchio, Florence

In the central tondo of the ceiling, the faithful Penelope sits at her loom among her maidservants, who spin and wind wool, weaving by day the shroud she unravels at night to keep her suitors waiting for Ulysses. Jan van der Straet, known as Stradano, painted it in 1561–1562 for the Sala di Penelope in the apartment of Eleonora of Toledo, framed by the Medici and Toledo coats of arms.
