The Trojan priest Laocoön and his two sons writhe in the coils of the sea serpents sent by the gods, in a marble group of extraordinary pathos. Praised by Pliny and attributed to three sculptors of Rhodes, it was found in 1506 on the Esquiline Hill in the presence of Michelangelo and bought by Julius II.
