Jupiter Nursed by the Goat Amalthea – Giorgio Vasari and workshop – Palazzo Vecchio, Florence

In the central panel of the ceiling, nymphs hold the infant Jupiter to the goat Amalthea, which fed him in a cave on Crete where he was hidden from his father Saturn. The painting, by Giorgio Vasari and his assistants around 1556, gives its name to the Sala di Giove in the apartments of the Elements, framed by gilded mouldings and grotesques on a red ground.
