Grotto Courtyard – Munich Residenz

The grotto wall is encrusted with shells, crystals and tufa, with niches holding sea-creature figures above basins on either side of a door, and a bronze statue rising at the upper left. Friedrich Sustris created this Mannerist courtyard in 1581–1586; it takes its name from this shell grotto on the west side of the Antiquarium.
