Globe (Mappa Mundi) – Egnazio Danti (detail) – Palazzo Vecchio, Florence

The great terrestrial globe, almost two metres in diameter, stands on its turned wooden base in the middle of the Hall of Geographical Maps, surrounded by cupboards painted with maps. The Dominican cosmographer Egnazio Danti made it for Cosimo I between 1564 and 1571, as the centrepiece of a room meant to present the whole known world.
