Filippo Scolari, called Pippo Spano – Andrea del Castagno – Bargello Museum, Florence

The Florentine condottiere who served the king of Hungary stands in armour, legs apart, gripping his sword in both hands like a living statue in a painted niche. Andrea del Castagno painted it in 1448–1449 for the cycle of Illustrious Men and Women of the Villa Carducci at Legnaia; the detached fresco was lent by the Uffizi.
