The Ghibelline leader, in a red cap and tunic over his armour, stands with his sword in a painted niche; the inscription below hails him as the liberator of his homeland. Andrea del Castagno painted it in 1448–1449 for the cycle of Illustrious Men and Women of the Villa Carducci at Legnaia; the detached fresco was lent by the Uffizi.
