The long sandstone façade on Piazza del Parlamento, with its regular rows of windows and central portal, was rebuilt under the Spanish viceroys in the 17th century. Behind it lies the oldest royal residence in Europe, begun by the Arab emirs, enlarged by the Norman kings and now the seat of the Sicilian Regional Assembly.
