Camillus and Brennus – Francesco Salviati – Palazzo Vecchio, Florence

As the Romans weigh out the gold of their ransom, the Gaulish chief Brennus throws his sword onto the scales, but Camillus arrives with his army and drives the Gauls from Rome in a violent mêlée. Francesco Salviati painted this episode in 1543–1545 on a wall of the Sala delle Udienze, beside a marble doorway crowned by a bust.
