Wedding Chest with the Palio of San Giovanni – Giovanni Toscani and workshop – Bargello Museum, Florence

The painted front of this cassone shows the horse race of the Palio of San Giovanni running through the streets of Florence past the Baptistery, watched by crowds under coloured banners. It was made by Giovanni Toscani and his workshop in the early 15th century to hold a bride's trousseau.
