Vault of the Gallery of the Candelabra – Ludwig Seitz – Vatican Museums

The painted vault celebrates Saint Thomas Aquinas and his works, shown writing amid angels, saints and Doctors of the Church, in panels framed by gilded grotesques. The German painter Ludwig Seitz painted it in 1883–1887 for Pope Leo XIII, who had made Thomist philosophy the basis of Catholic teaching.
