The pope kneels in prayer above a great drapery of red jasper, from beneath which a gilded skeleton emerges holding an hourglass, among the marble Virtues of Charity, Truth, Prudence and Justice, the whole set over a doorway. It was Bernini's last great work in Saint Peter's, made in 1671–1678.
