Saint John the Baptist – Raphael and workshop – Uffizi Gallery, Florence

The young John the Baptist, half-naked and brightly lit against a dark rock, raises one arm towards a small cross and holds a scroll announcing Christ, in a pose recalling the ancient Laocoön. Painted in Rome around 1517–1518 by Raphael and his workshop for Cardinal Pompeo Colonna.
