Saint Benedict, in his black habit, reads a book before a window opening onto a landscape, his face rendered with Flemish naturalism. Painted by Hans Memling in Bruges in 1487, it was a wing of a triptych made for Benedetto Portinari, whose portrait formed the other wing.
