Saint Andrew – François Duquesnoy – Saint Peter's Basilica, Vatican

The apostle Andrew, gazing up to heaven, embraces the X-shaped cross of his martyrdom in a colossal marble statue nearly 5 metres high, set in a niche of one of the four piers supporting the dome. The Flemish sculptor François Duquesnoy carved it in 1629–1640 as part of Bernini's project for the crossing.
