Prudence – Piero del Pollaiolo – Uffizi Gallery, Florence

Prudence, enthroned in a marble niche, holds a mirror to look behind her and a snake, an animal the Gospel calls prudent. Piero del Pollaiolo painted this cycle of Virtues around 1470 for the audience hall of the Tribunale di Mercanzia, the merchants' court in Piazza della Signoria.
