Elisabetta Gonzaga, the cultivated Duchess of Urbino, is shown frontally in a sober black gown, a scorpion-shaped jewel on her forehead, against a luminous landscape. Painted by Raphael around 1503–1506, it came to Florence in 1631 with the inheritance of Vittoria della Rovere.
