Portia – Fra Bartolomeo – Uffizi Gallery, Florence

Portia, wife of Brutus, stands like a living statue in a niche; after her husband's suicide she killed herself by swallowing burning coals, shown on the ground, becoming a symbol of marital fidelity. Painted around 1495, it is one of only two secular works by Fra Bartolomeo, with the Minerva in the Louvre.
