Small canvases repeat the young Bonaparte with long hair and a dark coat, cut out against snowy blue skies, sometimes inside an old gilded frame or with a tricolour corner. Eduardo Arroyo painted these variations from 1963 to 1966 after Gros's famous portrait of Bonaparte at the bridge of Arcole, mocking the cult of the hero.
