Pietà – Michelangelo – Saint Peter's Basilica, Vatican

The Virgin holds the body of the dead Christ across her knees, her young face calm in its grief, the drapery carved with astonishing finesse. Michelangelo carved it in 1498–1499 for a French cardinal; it is the only work he signed, on the sash across the Virgin's breast, and stands in the first chapel on the right in Saint Peter's.
