The young hero Perseus, nude but for a cloak and winged helmet, holds up the severed head of Medusa in a pose inspired by the Apollo Belvedere. Antonio Canova carved it in 1800–1801, and it was placed in the Octagonal Court of the Pio-Clementino Museum when the Apollo had been taken to Paris by Napoleon.
