In a gentle landscape, the Virgin watches the infant John the Baptist hand a goldfinch, symbol of the Passion, to the Christ Child standing between her knees. Painted by Raphael around 1505–1506 for the wedding of the Florentine merchant Lorenzo Nasi, it is one of his most admired works.
