The Virgin, wrapped in a dark blue mantle, turns away in surprise at the angel's message, on a gold ground. This panel, the right wing of a small Annunciation diptych, is by the Sienese master Simone Martini; it entered the Hermitage in 1911 by bequest of Count G. S. Stroganov.
