Dancing Maenads – Roman art – Uffizi Gallery, Florence

Three ecstatic maenads, followers of Dionysus, dance with swirling robes. This Pentelic marble relief of the late 1st century BC carefully copies three of six figures of a lost Athenian original by a sculptor of the school of Callimachus, known from over fifty Roman replicas.
