On a gold ground, the angel Gabriel greets a startled Mary, his words engraved between them, with Saints Ansanus and Maxima at the sides. Signed and dated 1333 by Simone Martini and his brother-in-law Lippo Memmi, it was painted for the altar of Saint Ansanus in Siena Cathedral and has been in the Uffizi since 1799.
