A tall full-size counterweight engine, with a heavy wooden box hanging at the short end of its throwing arm and a sling at the long end, stands on the terrace at the end of the spur. With its pivoting counterweight, the trebuchet was the most powerful stone-throwing machine of the Middle Ages, able to batter walls from a distance of up to 200 metres.
