A long throwing arm pivots on a light wooden frame, with a stone in the sling at one end and ropes hanging from the other, in front of the low wall of the terrace. In such machines, a team of men pulling on the ropes made the arm swing and hurl the projectile, a technique older than the counterweight trebuchet.
