Two round towers crowned with machicolations frame the arch of the only gate of the medieval fortress; the vertical slots held the drawbridge beams. The 12th- and 13th-century gatehouse replaced an 11th-century gate and was remodelled in the 15th century with a double passage, a guardroom and a gun terrace.
