The long yellow and white façade of the palace, with its projecting pavilions and rows of tall windows, rises beyond a water-filled moat and bare spring trees. Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli began the palace in 1736 as the summer residence of Ernst Johann Biron, favourite of Empress Anna and later Duke of Courland.
