Hunting crossbows and cranequins – Castelnaud Castle

In lit display cases hang hunting crossbows with stocks inlaid with bone, together with cranequins, the geared winding devices with a crank and a toothed rack. According to the labels, these hunting crossbows date from the 16th and 17th centuries and come mostly from Germany; the cranequin made it possible to draw a powerful steel bow.
